College Counsellor

Position Overview

At Whittle School & Studios, giving students choice and voice is the glue connecting all the parts of our approach to learning. Putting students at the center of their learning builds independence, confidence, motivation, and leadership ability. The College Counsellor position encompasses a collaborative effort benefiting students, parents, teachers, administrators, and the overall community. The College Counsellor is an integral part of students' educational environment and is a partner in supporting personalized college guidance in accordance with Whittle School & Studios’ mission and vision. The College Counsellor’s role aligns developmentally with each student's academic level and is key to a student’s academic success and college readiness. 

Responsibilities

We believe all children are naturally curious and born to be great thinkers, forming meaning from interactions with family, peers, teachers, and community. Core responsibilities of all Campus faculty members are organized loosely by the four program areas of the Whittle Ideal Candidate: (1) Core Curriculum, (2) Global Perspectives, (3) Personalized Pathways, and (4) Beyond the Core as well as those responsibilities expected as a member of a collaborative, professional learning community, and the expectations listed below:

  • Provide individualized college counseling to students seeking a pathway into higher education and tertiary studies

  • Communicate with students and parents about the college process

  • Write comprehensive letters of recommendation for each student

  • Assist with editing and reviewing essays and college applications 

  • Develop and maintain strong relationships with college admissions professionals

  • Stay current in the college admissions profession by visiting colleges, attending and presenting at workshops, and participating in conferences

  • Coordinate and facilitate school-wide events related to the college admissions process

  • Work collaboratively as a member of the Upper School team

  • Give effective planning advice for students applying Universities abroad from lower grade onwards to achieve the best possible application results.

  • All other duties as assigned. The duties described above are to serve as only as guidelines for, not limitations to, this position. 

In addition to administrative responsibilities, the College Counselor will be responsible for other duties as assigned, including and not limited to advising, coaching, and chaperoning.  A successful candidate will embrace the full life and diversity that exists on our campus.

  • Bachelor’s Degree required; Master’s Degree (or higher) preferred.

  • Must have minimum of 3 years full time College admissions experience at a School

  • Must have fluency in Chinese. 

  • Excellent writing and interpersonal skills

  • Ability to think strategically about the college process and to advise students and parents accordingly

  • Energy, collegiality, and a collaborative and empathetic personality

  • A comprehensive understanding of the needs of domestic, international, day, and boarding students

  • Strong organizational and time management skills 

  • Flexible availability, including evenings and weekends at critical times of the application process

  • Ability to meet deadlines 

  • Strong computer skills 

  • Drive and energy to thrive in a fast-paced, entrepreneurial environment

  • Experience of college counseling in an international context would be an advantage though is not required

  • Familiarity with US, UK and/or other international college and university application processes, including in the context of A-Level and AP qualifications or other international qualifications.

  • Familiarity and experience of test preparation (TOEFL, SAT and/or ACT)

Compensation  

Whittle School & Studios offers our staff very competitive total compensation packages that are either at or above market, depending on the position.
